Easter is on Sunday the 20th of April. You may even get a three-day weekend for the holiday. Long weekends are always popular travel dates and people will be flocking to Vegas and Arizona cities like Scottsdale and Phoenix.
Las Vegas
Las Vegas has found favor with Peter Cottontail, as it is an access point to the West Rim or the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. Tours that originate in Arizona only go to the South Rim, but that's okay because the South Rim is exceptionally beautiful. You can't take a tour that goes from one rim to the other. Visit one rim now and another later.
Bus schedules are never delayed or altered by the Easter holiday. Tours follow regular schedules. The tour operators usually provide free shuttle service to and from your hotel in the price of your tour package. These tours leave for the canyon around 7 or 8 AM, so be certain you have an alarm clock all set.
Excursions are known to last all day (8 hours or more), so early evening plans are not recommended. Las Vegas tourists have a choice: "Which rim should I visit?" Go to the West Rim if you want to do fun things at the canyon and go to the South Rim if you mainly want to see spectacular scenic views.
Tours To The West Rim
The West Rim is only 120 miles from Las Vegas and 2-hour bus ride is in order. Along the way, you'll see famous Lake Mead and the majestic Hoover Dam before making the turn onto Dolan Springs Road for the last leg to Grand Canyon West. When you arrive at the West Rim, you are ready for adventure. Be sure to head to the Grand Canyon Skywalk.
The Skywalk is amazing because it allows you to venture out 70 feet beyond the edge of the rim and peer down through the glass panels to the canyon floor 4000 feet below you. The views from the Glass Bridge are nothing short of spectacular.
This is the ONLY spot in the entire Grand Canyon National Park that offers a helicopter excursion to the bottom. The thrilling descent is a fifteen minute flight that is definitely worth experiencing. When you get to the bottom of the canyon, you can explore the banks of the Colorado River or the canyon walls as you please. Boat cruises are also available.
South Rim
The South Rim is 270 miles away from Vegas so the bus ride takes around 5 hours. Is it worth making the long trip? Positively, yes. Most of the famous photos of the Grand Canyon were taken at the South Rim because it has so many scenic landmarks. At the park, you'll be treated to a 2-hour bus tour inside the park and see notable places like Yaki Point, Mather Point, and Yavapai Point. You'll also get to spend some time at the unique Grand Canyon Village.
From Phoenix, the ride is almost 5 hours. That tour takes you by Sedona, so you can see the amazing red rock buttes. Another thing you can do when you get to the South Rim is take a helicopter ride over to the North Rim and back. The chopper takes off from the Grand Canyon National Park airport and flies you over the notable Dragoon Corridor on the way to the North Rim.
