When approached as starting with a large empty canvas, however, this process can uncover a variety of opportunities to highlight the features of the room, make the space multi-functional, and create a great area to entertain guests. Here are some tips that can get you started on your way to designing a room that maximizes its potential.

• Determine the focal points – One of the best ways to arrange furniture in a large room is to start by creating smaller spaces within it that are centered on different focal points. For example, a large living room may have a fireplace, an area for a wide screen HDTV, and a view window, each of which can serve as the anchor for a smaller furniture arrangement. While these areas will be arranged separately, it is important to coordinate colors and styles to retain a cohesive visual flow in the room as a whole.

• Use different but coordinated area rugs to define smaller spaces – Furniture arrangements that are anchored by a specific focal point can be defined further through the use of area rugs. While defining separate areas in the space, linking the rugs with pattern and/or color will add another layer of visual cohesiveness to the room.

• Define the scale of the room relative to the furnishings – While the square footage of two rooms may be the same, the scale can change dramatically with different ceiling heights.
